Yoruba cultural community in Rwanda: A celebration of heritage and unity

Kigali, Rwanda- Members of the Nigerian community living in Rwanda on Saturday evening gathered to formally launch the Yoruba cultural community, marking a significant moment of cultural affirmation, unity and shared identity within the diaspora.

The event brought together elders, professionals, families and young people in a vibrant celebration that reflected both the richness of Yoruba heritage and the spirit of togetherness among Nigerians in Rwanda.

The evening was filled with colour and rhythm as traditional dances, live drumming and music took centre stage. Creative performances by young boys and girls drew warm applause, symbolizing the passing of culture from one generation to the next.

Beyond the entertainment, the gathering served as a platform for reflection on identity, responsibility and cooperation within a multicultural host society that has welcomed diverse communities.

Addressing the audience, the President of the Association of Nigerians in Rwanda, Prof. Umar Garba Wali, described the launch as a historic milestone for the Nigerian diaspora.

He noted that African societies are known for strong cultural values, respect for elders, entrepreneurship and commitment to education, qualities he said Nigerians continue to uphold in Rwanda.

“Today, these values are being fully represented in the Rwandan landscape, and that is something we are all proud of,” Prof. Wali said.

He emphasized that the Association of Nigerians in Rwanda is anchored on unity in diversity, explaining that Nigeria’s many cultures and languages are bound together by a shared national identity and collective aspirations.

The evening was filled with colour and rhythm.

He was clear that the formation of the Yoruba Cultural Community strengthens the Nigerian community. “The emergence of a cultural community like the Yoruba community does not divide us. It gives us structure, cultural depth and a stronger foundation upon which national unity can flourish,” he said.

Wali stressed that the Yoruba community remains an integral part of the Association of Nigerians in Rwanda, adding that “your success is our success, and your challenges are our collective responsibility.”

Calling for close cooperation between the association and cultural communities, he said shared dialogue and collaboration would enhance representation and impact. He also reminded Nigerians of their duty as guests in Rwanda.

“Rwanda has shown us hospitality, peace and opportunity. In return, we must demonstrate unity, discipline, hard work and a positive contribution to society,” he said, noting that unity must be practiced, not merely spoken.

The event brought together elders, professionals, families and young people in a vibrant celebration.

Accepting the mandate as Chairman of the newly inaugurated Yoruba cultural community, Dr. Emanuel Odumeru expressed gratitude to the association’s leadership, elders and guests for their support.

Speaking on behalf of the executive committee, he described the day as both humbling and deeply significant.

“We accept this responsibility with humility and a strong sense of dignity,” Dr. Odumeru said. According to him, the community will work closely with elders and members to build a strong, vibrant and united Yoruba presence in Rwanda.

He pledged that the leadership would be guided by service, transparency, inclusiveness and teamwork, rooted in enduring Yoruba values that emphasize character, respect and communal responsibility.

Drawing from Yoruba wisdom, Odumeru highlighted the power of collective effort. “Our elders say one person cannot carry a heavy load alone. Together, we will achieve more,” he said.

The formation of the Yoruba Cultural Community strengthens the Nigerian community.

Guest speaker Dr. Mathew Adetunji reinforced the message of unity, noting that Yoruba culture is globally recognized for its rich traditions, artistic expression and strong social values.

He said the community’s establishment in Rwanda offers an opportunity to promote cultural exchange, youth development and positive engagement with the host nation.

As the celebration came to an end, the launch stood as a powerful statement of identity and cohesion. The Yoruba Cultural Community in Rwanda emerged not only as a custodian of heritage, but as a bridge between cultures, reinforcing unity among Nigerians.
