South Sudanese basketball sensation Anunwa “Nuni” Omot is set to bolster APR Basketball Club’s lineup just ahead of the 2025 Basketball Africa League (BAL) playoffs.
Rwanda Daily has confirmed that the 30-year-old forward, widely regarded as one of Africa’s elite talents, will touch down in Kigali on Saturday, May 31.
From there, he’ll join the APR squad for their journey to Pretoria, South Africa, where the high-stakes BAL playoffs are scheduled from June 6 to 14, 2025.
Currently playing for the Beijing Ducks in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), Omot brings a wealth of international experience to the Rwandan side.
His career has taken him across the globe, from the United States to Asia and various parts of Africa. Known for his versatility and scoring ability, Omot is also a core figure in South Sudan’s national team, which recently made headlines after a narrow 100–101 loss to the U.S. in a friendly match.
His leadership helped South Sudan qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris, a historic first for the nation.
Omot’s basketball journey began after a late switch from American football, growing up in Minnesota after fleeing a refugee camp in Nairobi, Kenya, with his mother and siblings in 1996.
Raised under difficult circumstances, his rise through college basketball, from Indian Hills to Concordia, then Baylor, has been nothing short of inspiring. He further cemented his legacy by earning MVP honors in a previous BAL season with Egypt’s Al Ahly.
APR, who qualified for the BAL playoffs after finishing second in the Nile Conference held in Kigali, are now gearing up to face some of the continent’s top clubs, including Petro de Luanda, US Monastir, and Rivers Hoopers. With Omot now on board, APR’s playoff ambitions have taken a thrilling new turn.
