Rwanda, Tanzania Reinforce Military Ties to Bolster Border Peace and Security

In a joint effort to solidify peace and stability along their shared border, senior military leaders from Rwanda and Tanzania gathered in Nyagatare District in Rwanda’s Eastern Province.

This high-level meeting marked the 12th engagement of its kind, underscoring the growing commitment to mutual security and cross-border collaboration.

The discussions centered on enhancing joint strategies to protect the border region, address emerging threats, and combat transnational crimes, which often pose challenges to border communities.

Officials from both nations emphasized the importance of working together to ensure long-term safety and regional harmony.

Brigadier General Pascal Muhizi, who commands Rwanda’s 5th Division, called on the military leadership to treat border security as a shared responsibility.

He credited the political goodwill and infrastructure investments by both governments for enabling deeper military cooperation and urged for sustained alertness, especially against threats like terrorism and illegal trafficking.

Brigadier General Gabriel Elias Kwiligwa of Tanzania’s 2020 Brigade echoed these sentiments, applauding the effectiveness of prior meetings, noting that many border-related challenges had been addressed due to the transparency and trust between the two defense forces.

According to him, the result has been a peaceful coexistence and stronger unity among the populations living along the border.

The Tanzanian delegation also visited Kirehe District officials and toured the Karushuga border area, which connects with Tanzania’s Kaisho District. This visit served as a practical reinforcement of the countries’ military and civil cooperation.

This continued partnership between the Rwanda Defence Force and the Tanzania People’s Defence Force signals a broader regional vision, one rooted in collaboration, peace, and shared prosperity for border communities.
