During his official visit to Algeria, President Paul Kagame paid a solemn tribute to the nation’s history by laying a wreath at the Maqam Echahid, or Martyrs’ Memorial, in Algiers.
The gesture honored the Algerian heroes who gave their lives during the country’s war of independence.
The moment was shared through a post by the Office of the President on social media, reading: “President Kagame laid a wreath at the Maqam Echahid (Martyrs’ Memorial) in Algiers, paying tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives during the Algerian War of Independence.”
This symbolic act formed part of President Kagame’s two-day official visit to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, which began on June 3, 2025.
The visit, held at the invitation of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aims to reinforce the already growing ties between the two countries.
President Kagame’s program includes high-level bilateral talks focusing on cooperation in education, security, infrastructure, and agriculture.
His visit also highlights Rwanda and Algeria’s shared commitment to honoring historical memory while working toward a united and forward-looking African future.
The wreath-laying ceremony at one of Algeria’s most revered landmarks reflects both respect for the past and a deepening partnership between Kigali and Algiers.
