Former WASAC CEO arrested as RIB probes corruption and abuse of office

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has confirmed the arrest of Prof. Omar Munyaneza, the former Director General of the Water and Sanitation Corporation (WASAC), alongside two other senior staff members from the same institution.

According to RIB, the trio is under investigation for serious allegations including corruption, favoritism, and soliciting sexual favors. The suspects are currently in custody at RIB’s Kimihurura and Kicukiro stations as preparations proceed to forward their case file to the National Public Prosecution Authority.

“These arrests are part of our ongoing commitment to holding public officials accountable. We commend the individuals who came forward and helped expose these violations,” RIB stated.

RIB further warned that exploiting public office for personal benefit is a criminal offense and will continue to be pursued rigorously.

“No one is above the law. Misusing public power for private gain undermines public trust, and we are determined to stop it for the good of society,” the agency emphasized.

Prof. Munyaneza, who was appointed to lead WASAC in September 2023 and removed from the position last month, now faces a legal battle that could have far-reaching implications for governance and accountability in public institutions.
