Rwanda Announces 23 Newborn Gorillas to be Named

Kigali, August 29, 2023, Rwanda Press – Rwanda’s tourism body has announced that twenty-three baby gorillas will be named at the annual gorilla naming ceremony.

According to the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), each of the 23 baby gorillas to be named has a unique story and will play a crucial role in the growth of this important species.

The annual gorilla naming ceremony is slated for September 1, 2023, and will see 23 baby mountain gorillas born in the last 12 months named.

The event will take place on the foothills of Volcanoes National Park in Kinigi, Musanze District in Northern Rwanda, joining the communities living around the home of the endangered mountain gorillas in the ultimate celebration of nature and conservation.

Initiated in 2005, the programme aims to guide investment in the areas surrounding the various national parks in Rwanda by ensuring that 10 per cent of all park revenues is returned to the communities.

This year, the institution seeks to launch two community projects, including a maternity unit as well as a potato seeds collection and conservation unit for residents to access maternal healthcare and quality seeds in Muganza Sector, Nyaruguru District in Southern Rwanda.

In 2022, Rwanda registered $445 million from tourism revenues, with gorilla trekking taking the lion’s share.
