Bayern Munich deepens Rwanda partnership with focus on youth football development

FC Bayern Munich and the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) have entered a new chapter in their high-profile partnership, transforming what began as a commercial sponsorship into a long-term collaboration centered on youth football development.

The renewed agreement, signed this week and running until 2028, marks a strategic shift from promoting the “Visit Rwanda” brand on the Bundesliga club’s jerseys to building a legacy of football excellence in Rwanda.

Both sides confirmed that the partnership has not been terminated, dismissing media reports suggesting otherwise.

Instead, they emphasized that the collaboration’s focus is evolving, with resources now being directed toward expanding the FC Bayern Academy in Kigali into a leading regional hub for player development, coaching expertise, and community engagement.

“Following positive and constructive discussions, we agreed that the commercial aspect of our original ‘Visit Rwanda’ agreement would be transformed into a new collaboration aimed at promoting youth football,” FC Bayern stated.

“The main objective of our partnership, also involving the Rwandan Ministry of Sports, is now to expand the FC Bayern Academy in Kigali.”

“A very special part of our relationship with RDB has been the developmental nature of our work in Kigali through the FC Bayern Academy,” Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said.

“We are therefore transforming our commercial partnership into a talent programme and expanding the academy together as both a football and social initiative. This aligns perfectly with our strategic objective of developing playing talent in Africa,” he added.

The relationship between Rwanda and Bayern Munich began in 2018 under the “Visit Rwanda” tourism campaign, which placed Rwanda’s brand on the club’s match day sleeves and promoted the country as a tourism and investment destination.

That visibility now gives way to deeper grassroots involvement designed to produce a lasting impact on Rwanda’s sporting landscape.

Jean-Guy Afrika, the CEO of RDB, highlighted the academy’s success as a model for how sports partnerships can drive development.

“As we enter a new phase, we are refocusing our resources to accelerate sports development, with emphasis on talent identification, coaching excellence, and sports infrastructure,” he said.

The Kigali-based FC Bayern Academy, established two years ago, currently trains 30 young players whose expenses are fully covered. The facility offers professional-level training rarely available in the country, led by a combination of local and German coaches.

Sessions take place at the Kigali Pelé Stadium, where floodlights allow uninterrupted evening training.

Two academy graduates, Ndayishimiye Barthazar and David Okoce, have earned spots in Bayern Munich’s prestigious U-19 World Squad for 2025. Their selection is being celebrated as a breakthrough moment for Rwandan football, proving that targeted investment in youth development can yield opportunities on the global stage.

The expanded academy will offer structured training programmes, elite coaching, and international exposure for talented players, while embedding values such as discipline, education, and community responsibility.

The initiative aligns with Rwanda’s broader strategy to integrate sport into its national development agenda, not only as a source of national pride but also as a platform for economic diversification and youth empowerment.

Rwanda’s history in competitive football has seen flashes of promise, notably its senior team’s appearance at the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and the U-17 national team’s participation at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.

However, consistent success at international tournaments has remained elusive. The new partnership phase aims to address this by building a strong pipeline of talent from the grassroots level upwards.

Since entering the collaboration with Bayern Munich in August 2023, Rwanda has positioned itself as a serious player in the global sports development arena.

The partnership sits alongside other high-profile sports marketing deals, including agreements with Arsenal in the UK and Paris Saint-Germain in France. Talks are also underway to bring Portuguese club Benfica into the fold, further expanding Rwanda’s international sporting footprint.

By associating with one of Europe’s most decorated football clubs, Rwanda not only gains a platform for developing future stars but also reinforces its brand as a destination for excellence, innovation, and opportunity.

As the 2028 horizon approaches, the success of this partnership will be measured not just in match results, but in the number of young lives transformed by the opportunity to learn, grow, and compete at the highest level.
