Former education minister Joseph Murekeraho dies at 73

Joseph Murekeraho, Rwanda’s former Minister of State for Education, has died at the age of 73. His family confirmed that he passed away on Friday, August 8, at Rwanda Military Hospital in Kigali, where he had been receiving treatment.

Relatives said he had been battling a mild illness since the previous week, but his condition worsened suddenly on the day of his death.

Burial arrangements have been set for Thursday, August 14, 2025, although the date may shift to accommodate family members who are still traveling.

Murekeraho held several key positions in Rwanda’s education sector, including State Minister responsible for Primary and Secondary Education.

He later served as chairman of Umwalimu SACCO, a teachers’ savings and credit cooperative that supports educators across the country.

His passing marks the end of a career dedicated to advancing education and improving opportunities for Rwandan teachers and students. Many remember him for his commitment to strengthening the nation’s education system and empowering the teaching profession.
