Liquid donates Rwf130m to safeguard Genocide memory

Liquid Intelligent Technologies has donated Rwf130 million to support the preservation of Rwanda’s genocide memorials, reinforcing its long-term commitment to safeguarding the memory of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The funds were handed over to the Imbuto Foundation under a decade-long pledge in which Liquid has committed US$1 million toward memorial conservation and education programs.

This year’s contribution marks the fourth annual installment, adding to efforts that combine technology and innovation to protect evidence, artifacts, and historical records.

Sam Nkusi, Executive Chairman of Liquid Intelligent Technologies Rwanda, said the initiative reflects the company’s belief in the power of digital preservation.

“The purpose is to make sure we always remember, especially the youth. We are all growing older. Tomorrow, if this history is not strengthened, documented, and preserved in accessible places, how will Rwanda’s future generations, or even foreigners, know it? The goal is to make sure the truth endures forever,” he said.

Nkusi encouraged other private sector actors to join in protecting Rwanda’s history, noting that the responsibility extends beyond government.

Through the partnership with Imbuto Foundation and the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement (MINUBUMWE), memorial sites are being upgraded and digitized to serve as full repositories of history.

The Ntarama Genocide Memorial in Bugesera District has already been enhanced, and the next project will focus on Nyange Genocide Memorial in Ngororero District. Works valued at Rwf100 million are expected to be completed by June 2026.

Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana, Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, welcomed the donation, stressing the urgency of protecting historical truth in the digital era.

“This collaboration with Liquid Intelligent Technologies and Imbuto Foundation is important because it is our responsibility, as Rwandans, to protect and preserve our history,” he said.

“In this digital era, where social media gives space to those who distort and deny facts, repeated lies can have lasting effects. That is why we must ensure the truth is preserved and widely shared,” Bizimana added.

The partnership has already contributed to Rwanda’s success in having four Genocide memorials inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, a milestone seen as recognition of their global significance.

Alongside memorial preservation, Liquid is also contributing to Rwanda’s digital future by providing free public internet access across the country. This dual focus, highlights the company’s wider role in Rwanda’s journey of resilience and inclusive development.
