Rwanda welcomes first migrants under new US resettlement agreement

Rwanda has received a first group of seven migrants from the United States under a new resettlement arrangement agreed between Kigali and Washington. The group, which arrived in mid-August, marks the beginning of a programme that could see Rwanda host up to 250 people over time.

Government spokesperson Yolande Makolo confirmed the development on Thursday, explaining that the seven individuals had been vetted prior to arrival. Of these, three expressed the wish to return to their home countries, while four indicated their desire to remain in Rwanda and rebuild their lives there.

The authorities did not disclose the nationalities of the migrants, but confirmed that their welfare was being supported in collaboration with international partners.

According to Makolo, the arrivals are accommodated through an international organization, with regular visits provided by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Rwanda’s social services.

The IOM also confirmed its involvement, noting that the agency had assessed the basic needs of the new arrivals as part of the resettlement process.

The agreement, announced earlier this month, allows Rwanda to consider up to 250 individuals proposed for resettlement from the United States, with the ability to approve each case individually.

The government has stressed that this initiative aligns with Rwanda’s own history and commitment to offering safe refuge to those in need. “Nearly every Rwandan family has experienced the hardships of displacement,” Makolo said recently, underscoring the country’s empathy for migrants and refugees.

Those who choose to remain in Rwanda will be provided with training, healthcare, and accommodation to help them integrate into their new environment and build sustainable lives.

For those wishing to return to their countries of origin, arrangements will be facilitated to ensure their safe passage. This latest arrangement reflects Rwanda’s growing role in international migration partnerships.

Kigali has previously engaged in discussions with other governments seeking practical solutions for resettlement.

While past agreements have evolved with changing administrations abroad, Rwanda’s position has consistently emphasized solidarity with people facing displacement and the value of shared responsibility among nations.

The collaboration with the United States is part of broader efforts to manage migration through cooperative frameworks that prioritize dignity, safety, and long-term support.

Rwanda, home to more than 13 million people, has often highlighted its own journey of recovery and stability as a foundation for contributing to such global challenges.

With significant investment in modern infrastructure and social services, the country has positioned itself as a safe and reliable partner in humanitarian and development initiatives.

By welcoming the first seven migrants, Rwanda has once again demonstrated its willingness to play an active role in addressing migration challenges through structured, humane, and collaborative approaches.
