Senegal crowned African champions

Kigali, Rwanda – Senegal have once again etched their name into African football history, defeating hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time to lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Rabat and establish their status as one of the continent’s modern powerhouses.

The final, staged before a capacity crowd at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium, delivered drama, intensity, and controversy, as the Teranga Lions overcame home advantage and immense pressure to claim their second AFCON title.

The contest unfolded as a finely balanced tactical duel, with both sides cautious yet assertive in their approach. Senegal absorbed pressure with discipline and maturity, while Morocco, driven by a fervent home crowd, pushed relentlessly in search of a breakthrough.

Tension peaked towards the end of the second half when Morocco were awarded a penalty decision that Senegal strongly disputed.

The ruling sparked heated protests, with Senegal’s players briefly threatening to leave the pitch in protest before calm was restored and play resumed. The moment showed the emotional weight of the final and added another layer of intensity to an already charged atmosphere.

Regulation time ended goalless, setting the stage for extra time, where patience finally paid off for Senegal. In the 94th minute, Pape Gueye struck the decisive goal, breaking the deadlock and tilting the final decisively in Senegal’s favour.

Morocco responded with urgency, throwing numbers forward, but Senegal’s defence, among the most resolute throughout the tournament, stood firm to protect the narrow lead and seal the title.

The occasion was further elevated by the presence of President Paul Kagame, who attended the final in Rabat. Following the match, President Kagame congratulated the Lions de la Teranga on their achievement, praising their perseverance, unity, and excellence.

“I also commend Morocco for their strong performances throughout this well-organized tournament and thank them for their warm hospitality,” he said, acknowledging the hosts’ role in delivering a memorable AFCON.

Having first lifted the trophy in 2021, Senegal have now confirmed their consistency at the highest level of African football. Under coach Pape Thiaw, the team blended experience with emerging talent, producing a balanced and composed campaign.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Ibrahim Mbaye, introduced from the bench in the final, played his part in the historic success and joined a select group of PSG players to win the AFCON, following Abdou Diallo and Idrissa Gueye from Senegal’s previous title-winning side.

Morocco reached the showpiece after edging Nigeria on penalties in a tense semi-final, while Senegal advanced by defeating Egypt 1–0. Individual honors reflected the quality on display throughout AFCON 2025.

Senegal talisman Sadio Mané was voted Best Player of the Tournament after leading by example, scoring two goals and providing constant inspiration during the Teranga Lions’ march to glory.

Morocco’s Brahim Díaz finished as the tournament’s top scorer with five goals from seven matches, while goalkeeper Yassine Bono was named Best Goalkeeper for his outstanding performances between the posts.

Morocco also received the Fair Play Award, underlining their discipline and organization across the competition, while Nigeria secured third place.

The Teranga Lions emerged as worthy champions once more, setting a high benchmark for African football and closing a tournament that will be remembered for its quality, controversy, and defining moments.
