When the world was rushing toward e-commerce giants and global brands, Didier Bizimungu, a young Rwandan tech enthusiast, chose to look inward.
Instead of competing with international marketplaces, he built an online platform designed to make everyday shopping easier for Rwandans while empowering local traders and producers to thrive in a rapidly digitalizing economy.
It all began with an idea that was as personal as it was practical. Bizimungu noticed how time-consuming and stressful grocery shopping could be for people in Kigali juggling busy work schedules, traffic, and the unpredictability of market prices.
“I wanted to create something that helps people shop easily without losing time or energy,” he recalls. That spark grew into www.duhahirane.rw, a clean, user-friendly website that allows customers to browse, order, and receive groceries and household essentials from the comfort of their homes.
From fresh fruits and vegetables to beverages and pantry staples, the connects consumers directly to reliable local suppliers.
But the project isn’t just about convenience. It was also about connection, between technology and community, between buyers and small businesses, and between informal vendors and the formal economy.

Digitizing local trade
Didier’s innovation tapped into a deeper national need of transitioning from informal trading into structured, sustainable business. Drawing inspiration from the Duhahiranecooperative model, which began as a way to organize and formalize small-scale street vendors in Kigali’s Gisozi Sector, he envisioned a digital space that would serve the same purpose online.
Through his platform, local vendors and cooperatives gain visibility, access to broader markets, and the credibility that comes with being part of a formal e-commerce ecosystem.
It’s a step that aligns perfectly with Rwanda’s growing digital economy and its ambition to foster homegrown solutions for local challenges.
“Technology is not just about coding or apps. It’s about solving real problems. For us, that problem was how to help small traders reach more customers and how to make shopping less of a chore for everyone,” Bizimungu says.

A platform with purpose
Today, Duhahirane is more than a marketplace. It’s a symbol of how digital innovation can fuel inclusive development. Customers enjoy time-saving convenience and quality products delivered to their doorsteps. Vendors enjoy fairer trade, better organization, and the chance to grow their businesses sustainably.
Behind the screen, Bizimungu,s small but passionate team manages logistics, customer service, and digital marketing, ensuring that each transaction supports a cycle of trust, efficiency, and local empowerment.
The platform’s “Buy Local” message resonates strongly with Rwanda’s Made-in-Rwanda movement, reinforcing pride in locally produced goods.
Inspiring the next generation of entrepreneurs
Bizimungu,s journey reflects a new wave of young Rwandans who are redefining entrepreneurship, not by waiting for opportunity, but by building it themselves. His vision for Duhahirane goes beyond profits
He hopes to expand the service across districts, integrate more local cooperatives, and explore mobile app solutions to make access even easier.
“I see this as part of Rwanda’s digital future. If we can use tech to empower our people, support our farmers, and make life simpler for customers, then we are already changing something,” he says with quiet confidence. “
By combining technology, local commerce, and community values, Bizimungu has turned a modest idea into a meaningful enterprise, one that bridges Rwanda’s tradition of cooperative spirit with the limitless potential of the digital age.
