Kigali Rwanda – The iconic Château le Marara hotel, situated on the shores of Lake Kivu, has officially reopened under new management, according to Karongi district officials.
This follows several months of closure, enacted by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) on July 22, 2025, after determining it lacked the legally required license for tourism and hospitality operations.
“The dream you had of relaxing in one of the most beautiful places in Rwanda has come true! Château Le Marara, the magnificent property on the shores of Lake Kivu in Karongi District, has reopened its doors! In this district, there are 14 hotels ready to warmly welcome visitors,” Karongi district said in a statement.
Royal Retreat, a hospitality company, will now manage the hotel, tasked with restructuring operations and improving service quality.
This decision followed widespread public criticism stemming from a wedding hosted at the hotel. The couple cited poor service, repeated power outages without backup generators, substandard meals, and overall disappointing hospitality.
The previous hotel management subsequently filed a legal complaint, accusing the couple of defamation and attempting to avoid paying outstanding charges.

Major service overhaul under new management
Emmanuel Ngayaboshya, affiliated with Royal Retreat and the incoming Head Chef, stated that Château le Marara plans to resume full guest operations before this year’s end. Initial reforms will prioritize kitchen and service standards.
Ngayaboshya explained that the previous lack of a structured reservation system led to misunderstandings between clients and staff.
“The reservation process for accommodation, weddings, photoshoots, and other services will be overhauled. The previous lack of structure created friction between customers and the hotel,” he said.
Despite expectations of five-star service, inspections revealed significant deficiencies, particularly in the kitchen. Ngayaboshya confirmed that food and beverage services are being redesigned to meet the desired standard.
“We are preparing to ensure that our services, especially in terms of food, meet five-star standards,” he stated.

While room prices will remain the same, food and beverage prices may be adjusted. Staffing will also be evaluated to ensure it meets five-star service expectations.
“The new management is not planning to replace the existing team. Instead, we will identify areas for improvement, such as training needs and work ethic. Service quality is heavily dependent on attitude,” he added.
Despite the online backlash following the wedding controversy, Ngayaboshya believes public confidence in the hotel remains strong, and management anticipates welcoming a large number of guests for New Year celebrations. The hotel currently offers 21 rooms.
