Festive season working hours for bars and entertainment venues lifted

Kigali, Rwanda – Rwanda has temporarily extended operating hours for bars, restaurants and entertainment venues during the end-of-year festive season, as authorities seek to accommodate increased social activity while maintaining public order and safety.

The measures, announced by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), will run from December 22, 2025 to January 5, 2026, a period that typically sees heightened travel, nightlife and tourism across the country.

According to the notice issued in Kigali on December 21, eligible businesses will be allowed to operate until 3:00 a.m. from Friday to Sunday, after which customers must have vacated the premises.

On weekdays and Sunday nights, earlier closing times will apply. Officials say the temporary adjustment reflects common weekend leisure patterns during the holidays, while helping to limit noise and disturbances during the working week.

The directive places particular emphasis on responsible business conduct, especially the protection of minors. RDB reiterated that the sale or consumption of alcohol by persons under the age of 18 is strictly prohibited, warning that violations will attract sanctions.

Enforcement of underage drinking laws is routinely strengthened during festive periods, when social gatherings and late-night events become more frequent.

Business operators and patrons were also cautioned against activities that disrupt public order. Authorities stressed that legal action will be taken against individuals or establishments found engaging in disorderly or unlawful conduct.

The reminder aligns with Rwanda’s long-standing approach to public safety, which combines clear regulation with coordinated enforcement by relevant institutions.

The temporary extension comes against the backdrop of a fast-growing hospitality and entertainment sector, particularly in Kigali, where nightlife has expanded alongside tourism and conference-driven activity.

Seasonal regulations have become a common tool to manage peak demand without undermining community safety.

As Rwandans prepare to celebrate Christmas and the New Year, officials say the revised hours are meant to support vibrant but responsible festivities, encouraging businesses and the public to enjoy the season while respecting the rules that keep communities safe.
