RNP welcomes 1,903 new officers

Kigali, Rwanda – The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has added 1,903 newly trained officers to its ranks, including 359 women, following the successful completion of the 21st intake of the Basic Police Course at the Police Training School in Gishari, Rwamagana district.

The graduation marks another step in the country’s efforts to strengthen internal security and professional policing standards nationwide. The pass-out ceremony was held on Monday, December 22, and was presided over by the Minister of Interior, Vincent Biruta.

It brought together senior government officials and police leadership to witness the culmination of months of rigorous training.

The event featured practical demonstrations in public order management and shooting drills, offering a clear indication of the recruits’ preparedness to take on policing duties and serve communities across the country.

Addressing the graduates, Commissioner of Police Robert Niyonshuti, the Commandant of the Police Training School in Gishari, praised the discipline and commitment shown throughout the course.

He reminded the new officers that the training they had completed was only the first stage of a longer professional journey. “I commend the trainees for their enthusiasm and dedication. The training you have completed is just the beginning,” he said.

“Throughout your service, you will continue to receive additional training and develop skills to effectively fulfil your duties. Wherever you serve, remember that discipline is the pillar of this profession. I welcome you to this career. As your elders, we are ready to support you throughout your journey,” he added.

The pass-out ceremony was held on Monday, December 22, and was presided over by the Minister of Interior, Vincent Biruta.

Biruta also commended the recruits for choosing a career dedicated to public service and security, noting that their performance reflected strong character and determination. He encouraged them to build on the foundation laid during training as they transition into active duty.

“I commend you for choosing to join your senior colleagues in this profession. The skills you have acquired provide a strong foundation for the responsibilities ahead. Your progress reflects hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude. May this achievement inspire you to continue advancing in this noble career,” he said.

The Minister further acknowledged the leadership of the Rwanda National Police for its sustained efforts to professionalize the force and expand its reach across the country.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to continued investment in policing. “I also thank the leadership of the Rwanda National Police for their commitment to building the institution across the country. The Ministry of Interior and the Government will continue strengthening the Police in capacity, skills, and numbers to protect people and their property,” Biruta added.

The graduation of the 21st intake underscores Rwanda’s broader strategy of investing in human capacity, professionalism, and discipline within its security institutions, ensuring that communities remain safe and well served by a capable and modern police force.
