Kigali, Rwanda – The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has reached the semifinal stage, carrying with it a trail of drama, records and powerful human moments. Hosted by Morocco, the tournament has steadily grown into a continental celebration that blends elite football with cultural pride.
From packed stadiums in Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier and Marrakech to gripping knockout matches, AFCON 2025 has confirmed its place as Africa’s most influential sporting event.
On the pitch, individual brilliance has defined much of the narrative, with Morocco’s Brahim Díaz emerging as a historic figure. The Real Madrid winger became the first player in AFCON history to score in each of his first five matches at a single finals.

His latest strike opened the scoring in Morocco’s 2–0 quarterfinal win over Cameroon, reinforcing his central role in the hosts’ title push.
Díaz’s run began in the group stage with goals against Comoros, Mali and Zambia, before he delivered a dramatic 86th-minute winner against Tanzania in the round of 16.
By scoring against five different nations, he joined former Egypt striker Gedo as the only players to achieve that feat in one AFCON tournament. Since switching allegiance from Spain in 2024, Díaz has scored 13 goals in 20 appearances for Morocco.

Beyond statistics, AFCON 2025 has delivered moments of unity that have resonated far beyond the stadiums. Nigeria’s quarterfinal victory over Algeria was sealed by Akor Adams, whose second goal secured a 2–0 win and a semifinal place.
Adams’ celebration, inspired by DRC super fan Mboladinga ‘Lumumba’, drew widespread admiration for its message of solidarity across national lines.
The Confederation of African Football amplified the gesture on its official platforms, prompting praise from fans across the continent. The moment underscored how the tournament has become a stage not only for competition, but also for shared identity and respect.

Such scenes have complemented the football, adding emotional depth to an already compelling competition.
Off the pitch, AFCON 2025 has rewritten attendance records. By 10 January 2026, a total of 1,117,846 fans had passed through nine stadiums, averaging more than 23,000 spectators per match.
The figure has already surpassed the record set at the 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, with remaining games expected to push the milestone even higher.
As the semifinals loom, AFCON 2025 stands as a testament to excellence, emotion and unity, promising a finale worthy of a tournament that has already reshaped African football history for generations ahead.
