In an audacious move to engage the next generation of global thinkers, Bridgewater Associates, one of the world’s most influential hedge funds, has teamed up with international advocacy powerhouse Global Citizen to launch Forecasting the Future: A Modern Economics Challenge.
This global initiative invites young minds and emerging economists to predict the real-world impacts of a changing global order.
As traditional globalization gives way to a new economic landscape shaped by protectionist policies and rapid technological advances like artificial intelligence, Bridgewater has dubbed this new era Modern Mercantilism.
Participants are tasked with analyzing how these shifts will affect global trade, national economies, and vulnerable communities.
Submissions must forecast the effects of this transformation, identifying which countries, industries, or groups stand to win or lose, and highlight the critical risks and opportunities policymakers must prepare for.
The top 100 entries will be shortlisted, and the five most compelling forecasts will each earn a $25,000 award. But the opportunity goes beyond that where winners will also be offered internships or employment at Bridgewater, subject to interview performance.
“We are living through one of the most consequential economic shifts of our time. To navigate this new reality, we need the sharpest minds and boldest ideas, no matter where they come from. This challenge is an open invitation to those who want to shape the future,” said Nir Bar Dea, CEO of Bridgewater Associates.
Global Citizen’s CEO, Hugh Evans, echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the need for globally inclusive solutions. “The future is unfolding fast. This challenge gives people everywhere the chance to contribute data-driven insights that could guide global policy and protect those most at risk,” he said.
The partnership between Bridgewater and Global Citizen builds on past collaboration, including their 2024 effort that supported the World Bank’s IDA21 replenishment, helping to secure a historic $100 billion commitment.
Now, with Forecasting the Future, the two organizations are inviting the world’s brightest minds to look ahead and make their voices count. Submissions close on August 1, 2025.
