The evolution of Pickleball on Rwanda’s sports scene

When the game of Pickleball was first introduced in Rwanda during the COVID-19 pandemic, few imagined how quickly it would capture public interest.

Originally invented in the United States in the 1950s, the sport had faded into obscurity before being rediscovered globally during the pandemic years.

In Rwanda, it has since grown from a little-known pastime into a fast-emerging discipline making its mark both locally and on the continental stage.

At the center of this journey is Zacharie Kamugisha, a Rotarian and President of the interim Rwanda Pickleball Federation, who saw in the sport something that could uniquely fit into Rwandan society.

“Nowadays, people face many challenges and often lack proper ways to relax, but this game is among the best for stress relief because it requires a lot of mental engagement,” he explained.

For him, Pickleball was not just about competition, but about community, well-being, and inclusivity.

In less than five years since its introduction, Rwanda has already fielded a national team at the African Games. In March 2024, four players, including Kamugisha himself and Dr. Elizabeth Krebs, represented the country in Accra, Ghana.

For a sport still in its infancy locally, stepping onto a continental platform alongside established disciplines is a remarkable milestone.

The momentum has been reinforced by efforts to make the sport more accessible. Courts have already been established in Kicukiro as demonstration grounds, allowing beginners to experience the game firsthand.

Unlike many sports that require extensive equipment or training facilities, Pickleball is simple and affordable.

“This is a game that surely doesn’t need a lot of investments in order to reap benefits. It strongly helps in mental health, it’s simple to play and enjoy,” Kamugisha explained.

The sport’s inclusivity is another major driver of its popularity. Both men and women can compete without restrictions, and the game is equally suited for children, youth, and older players.

A federation and a global future

While achievements so far are impressive, the future looks even brighter. Plans are underway to formalize the Rwanda Pickleball Federation, giving the sport official recognition and paving the way for greater participation in international competitions.

As Rwanda continues to build its reputation as a hub for sports and tourism, Pickleball adds a unique dimension, an activity already popular abroad that can attract visitors while enriching local communities.

Tourists familiar with the game in North America and Europe are finding a pleasant surprise in discovering courts in Kigali. At the same time, locals are being introduced to a sport that blends the excitement of tennis with the simplicity of community play.

Pickleball’s journey in Rwanda is one of steady growth fueled by passion, accessibility, and purpose. The debut representation at the African Games, small community tournaments and the nationwide advocacy for mental health, the game has proven its relevance at every stage.

This is a game that brings families together, strengthens communities, and gives Rwanda another proud platform in the global sports arena. With every new player who picks up a paddle, the country is writing the next chapter in a story about sport, resilience, health and opportunity.
