WB launches drive to elevate education standards in Rwanda

This week, the Ministry of Education of Rwanda inaugurated a support mission under the Quality Basic Education for Human Capital Development Project, a drive championed by the World Bank.

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Charles Karakye, received and discussed Rwanda’s efforts to upgrade classrooms, textbooks, and teacher support systems with visiting WB team.

The mission will assess progress made so far, touching on physical infrastructure and pedagogical improvements alike. It will travel to schools such as TCC Gacuba and TCC Mayange A, witnessing firsthand how modern learning spaces are reshaping students’ formative years.

In welcoming the team, Karakye underscored the importance of tangible transformation in education. Rwanda’s commitment to this project is backed by a substantial $200 million credit from the World Bank.

The initiative is structured around three core pillars: enhancing teacher effectiveness, improving school environments, and strengthening institutional capacity. In recent progress reports, the project has shown promising advancement.

Improvements in teacher knowledge, recruitment, infrastructure works such as retaining walls and rainwater harvesting systems, and expanded textbook provision are all moving steadily forward.

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Charles Karakye met with the WB team.

Officials have described the initiative as pivotal for Rwanda’s vision of becoming a knowledge-based economy. The project also responds to challenges around learning retention and quality.

Some indicators have already met or exceeded targets, especially in teacher training and learning assessments though some lingering concerns remain around student retention, demanding ongoing focus

In recent years, Rwanda has invested heavily in scaling up infrastructure under its home-grown school construction approach, building thousands of classrooms, latrines, and school kitchens.
